Diastasis Recti (Abdominal Separation)

Diastasis recti is a condition where the abdominal muscles separate, leaving a gap in the middle. It is a common problem, especially among women who have just given birth. The condition can cause lower back pain, weak core muscles, and a bulge in the abdominal area. However, physiotherapy can help in the recovery and rehabilitation of diastasis recti.

What causes diastasis recti?

Pregnancy is the most common cause of diastasis recti. As the baby grows, the abdominal muscles stretch and separate, causing a gap. Other factors that can contribute to the condition include:

  • Genetics
  • Obesity
  • Chronic coughing or sneezing
  • Rapid weight gain or loss

What can a Women’s Health Physiotherapist do?

Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of diastasis recti. A physiotherapist can help you with:

  1. Core strengthening exercises: The physiotherapist will design a specific exercise program to strengthen your core muscles. The exercises will target the transverse abdominal muscle, which helps in reducing the gap between the abdominal muscles.
  2. Breathing techniques: The physiotherapist will teach you proper breathing techniques to use during exercise and daily activities to avoid further separation of the abdominal muscles.
  1. Pelvic floor muscle exercises: The physiotherapist will also focus on strengthening the pelvic floor muscles, which are essential for supporting the abdominal muscles.
  2. Correct posture: The physiotherapist will educate you on the importance of maintaining good posture to reduce the strain on the abdominal muscles.
  3. Stretching: The physiotherapist may also include stretching exercises in the rehabilitation program to improve flexibility and reduce pain.
