Dry needling is derived from traditional Chinese acupuncture and has recently been recognised by Western Medicine as being particularly helpful in musculoskeletal medicine and pain management.
Dry needling involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles (single-use) tapped painlessly into the skin and muscle at a myofascial trigger point. A myofascial trigger point (sometimes referred to as a “knot” in the muscle) can be defined as a small area within a muscle, which after an injury can remain painful for a period of time long after the original problem has healed. This can cause pain that can refer to other areas, resulting in stiffness, tenderness and other problems.
Proper dry needling of a myofascial trigger point will elicit a localised feeling of heaviness, numbness or tingling via the stimulation of very tiny nerve endings which cause changes in blood chemistry and hormones, which in turn reduces pain and influences healing. Dry needling has been shown to be very effective in both acute and chronic conditions.
